Lyric Poem
A poem that expresses the personal feelings or thoughts of the speaker

Narrative Poem
A poem that tells a story

Onomatopoeia
The use of a word whose sound imitates or suggests its meaning, i.e. thud, snap

Refrain
A repeated sound, word, or phrase, line or group of lines

Rhyme
A repetition of sounds at the end of words

End Rhyme
The most common form of poetry, in which the words that rhyme are at the end of lines

Internal Rhyme
A rhyme that occurs within a line

Rhyme Scheme
The pattern of rhymes in a poem; described by using a different letter to represent each rhyming sound

Rhythm
A pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in poetry; when the stressed syllables are arranged in a consistent pattern the poem has a regular beat

Stanza
A group of lines within a poem; similar to a paragraph in prose writing
