governmental health agency can be an international, national, state, or
local agency that gets its funding through the tax dollars paid by citizens.
This funding is monitored by people appointed to do so by the government. An
example of a government health agency would be the Department of Health and
Human Services (HHS). A quasi-governmental health agency is a mix between a
governmental health agency and a non-governmental agency. They can be funded
several ways. Some of this funding includes (but is not limited to) community
fundraising effort, special allocations from government bodies, fees for
services rendered, and donations. An example of a quasi-governmental health
agency is the American Red Cross.
Typically, a non-governmental health agency receives its
funding privately. This private funding is often times given through donations.
Non-governmental health agencies all have the common goal of providing an
agency for needs that required more attention. The typology of non-governmental
public health organizations includes voluntary organization (ex: American
Cancer Society), nongovernmental organizations (ex: Partners for Health),
social and faith-based organizations (ex: Rotary Club – Campaign against
Polio), professional organization (ex: American Public Health Association),
philanthropic foundations (ex: Robert Wood Johnson Foundation), and
intergovernmental organizations (ex: World Health Organization).
A 501c3 status is typically gained when you have nonprofit
organization. This status allows for the exemption of certain taxes.
There are plethora of roles and responsibilities the local
health department must accomplish. Some roles of a local heath department

strong leadership in that the LHD takes initiate in improving quality and
standards of community member’s health.
There are state laws that required the local heath
department to have inspections and provide statistics of findings.
Three governance relationships that exists between
state and local health departments would include policy development, resource
stewardship, and legal compliance. Policy development would be a governance
relationship that ensures public health is actually improving and being able to
confirm that the agency is following all legal laws. Resource stewardship is
