According
to the dictionary, an order is “an authoritative direction,
instruction, command, or mandate.” Therefore,
following orders is of the utmost importance in the military. The key
to successful team work, following and leading is learning how to
follow the instructions of those appointed over you. Regardless of
rank, orders from above must be followed unless an order is
overridden by a higher power especially in the realm of cyber.
Orders instill a sense discipline and
deciding not to follow the orders given, increases the likelihood of
failure. Ignoring or disobeying orders can also be seen as a lack of
communication and organization, which can reflect negatively on both
the person giving the orders and the person receiving them. If an
order is not followed, the results of the delay or disobedience could
mean the difference between a working system or a catastrophic system
failure. In an MOS that specializes in cyber security, orders are a
life line to both the military and the systems that rely on that
cyber security. As terrorists turn more to technology to try and get
their point across, cyber-attacks are increasing in frequency. In
other words, terrorists are turning to hacking vulnerable cyber
systems to cause mass panic, chaos, and death if possible. Therefore,
it falls to the cyber MOS to help mitigate those vulnerabilities in
the systems to prevent these attacks from happening. This ultimately
means that a failure to follow an instruction or order to the letter
could result in a vulnerability not being patched, or fixed, to
possibly a fault in a script causing a system shutdown. For example,
a dam has a default setting of open. If a system failure occurs
because an order wasn’t followed, the dam gates completely open
releasing thousands of gallons of water in order to save the
integrity of the dam’s structure. This release of water can cause
massive damage to the area surrounding the dam, and if that dam is
near a populated town it can cause the death of many of the people
living there. When life or death hangs in the balance, it’s
important to follow every instruction or lawful order given to the t
in order to maintain a systems integrity against cyber-attacks and to
prevent the loss of life and damage to the surrounding area.
