Angela group of other young girls in Salem

Angela LedbetterMrs.VasquezAdvanced English III5 January 2018Conforming Conforming can cause people to change their morals to fit someone else’s. The sources provided prove that people disregard their own opinions and do what others want to prevent judgement. In certain situations people tend to do things they would not normally do or want to do in order to please people. In the novel The Crucible Mary and a group of other young girls in Salem had been threatened by the leader of the group Abigail Williams, the girls were told to pretend to be bewitched. They accused several people until the accusations got out of hand and several innocent people were killed.John Proctor’s wife was accused by Abigail and that is when he realized enough is enough and persuaded Mary to come forward to tell the truth.”I…I cannot tell you how, but I did. I ….I heard the other girls screaming, and you, your honor, you seemed to believe them and I… It were only sport in the beginning sir, but then the whole world cried spirits.”(Miller 1306)Mary only conformed because she was trying to save herself and did not realize how her actions would cause such a bad outcome. As she admits to her wrong doing no one is sure whether to believe her or not and she realizes that things are not going as she hoped. Abigail quickly pretends to be bewitched by Mary which made the situation worse for her so she chooses to lie again  “My name, he want my name; I’ll nursed you he says, if my wife hangs:we must go and overthrow the court, he says.”(Miller 1314)Mary turns on John Proctor to save herself to prevent from being one of the accused. If accused she would have to deal with the whole town thinking she was a witch and possibly would have gotten hanged. The story Shooting An elephant involved an elephant that  had gotten loose and caused commotion through the town of  Moulmein, Lower Burma. The author was called to handle the situation but he did not want to handle it the way the Burmans wanted.”They did not like me, but with the magical rifle in my hands I was momentarily worth watching and suddenly I realized that I would have to shoot the elephant after all.The people expected it of me and I had got to do it.”(Orwell 1256)Regardless of how he felt about killing the elephant he felt obligated to. He did not want to let the people around him down and he did not want to feel like a coward. The author put his feelings aside and gave the people what they wanted. The author of On The Rainy River was drafted into the Vietnam War and that was the last thing he had wanted. He wanted no part of participating and was completely ignorant on the topic of war.”All those eyes on me-the town, the whole universe and I couldn’t risk the embarrassment. It was as if there were an audience to my life, that swirl of faces along the river, and in my head I could hear people screaming at me.Traitor! They yelled Turncoat! I felt myself blush. I couldn’t tolerate it.”(O’Brien 1016)The author chose not to run away from the war when he had the opportunity because he could not deal with what people would think of him.                     During the Cold War, people were overly suspicious about possible communist in the U.S. Many people were accused without any evidence.”On February 20, 1950, McCarthy addressed the Senate and made a list of dubious claims against suspected communists. He cited 81 cases that day. He skipped several numbers, and for some cases repeated the same flimsy information. He proved nothing, but the Senate called for a full investigation..”( USHistory.org 9)McCarthy accused many people without having any proof and they were still investigated and their reputation was never the same. There was not much anyone could do and people did not say anything because they did not want attention on them or they could possibly be accused. “Above all, several messages became crystal clear to the average American: Don’t criticize the United States. Don’t be different. Just conform.”( USHistory.org 24)During this time period the best thing for the people to do was conform whether they agreed with the situation or not questioning the U.S would only make them look suspicious. In many situations people put their own feelings before others. They did not think of the consequences of conforming but ,only what would happen if they did not.In all the stories the people regretted going against what they knew was right and realized it only caused themselves guilt.Their decisions later affected  them mentally knowing that they could not take their decision to conform back. They felt a huge amount of pressure around them which altered their decision making.
