Azra RazaMrs.RyanEnglish 1H20, November 2017Competition into Collaboration “If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree it will believe its whole life thinking that it is stupid,” Albert Einstein. This quote by Albert Einstein means that it is inappropriate to judge a person by focusing on a skill which he/she does not possess.
A fish is specialized to swim, and its ability to climb a tree is non-existent, this correlates with a student’s ability to learn certain subjects and their understanding of the concepts. We have been using the same classroom style for 200 years. Students sit in straight rows, raise their hand if they want to speak, are told what to think for 8 hours a day, and get grades that determines the quality of their work. The world has progressed, and now we need people who think creatively, innovatively, critically, interdependently, and with the ability to connect.
We are operating on a 200- year-old school system in a world that needs an entirely different skill set. A lot has happened since the mid-1990s, and according to teachers very few have seen the effects of those changes on future generations. Today’s schools are not designed to prepare us for our knowledge or its demand for outcomes over progress. Schools should be teaching us to develop, increase,to record, and to provide, but while our education system hasn’t changed, and the world we’re living in has.
“Not one program fits all” says Anita Perry. We can’t prepare our generation for jobs that exist, but rather be prepared to be flexible and adaptable to change and create jobs that don’t yet exist. The students who attend private and public schools alike come with more learning challenges than ever before, and the trend shows no sign of curriculum change. In the beginning, for hundreds of thousands of years, children educated themselves through self-directed play and exploration. Now the teacher’s teach the students but most of the material is taught not to accustom every child’s needs. This problem originated from a limited willingness to take risks, personally and organizationally, to pick up the pace of experiential learning and change among all who contribute or influence through control of our educational system.
Most teachers, administrators, and policy makers aren’t assessment cultivated, they don’t know enough about how to gather and use evidence of student learning. A poorly educated populace affects everybody. We all seem too quickly satisfied with the easy answers our teachers spoon feed us and we quickly forgot a key question in our education. ” Why?”. The drawbacks associated with uneducated people are really undisputed at this point because there are countless studies showing that children who never had basic education tend not to enjoy better health and receive lower incomes over their lifetimes. Our hunger for better education in this country never stops. It is the foundation of what makes us as students great and the key ingredient to become successful. Over 77% of children are being left behind this is even with the NCLB law ( no child left behind) The statistics are overwhelming yet worth repeating.
We as teachers and students need to learn to include collaboration instead of competition into not only our schools but in our life styles.Every scientist will tell you no two brains are the same, and every parents with two or more children will confirm that claim. We need to stop treating students like cookie cutter frames, giving them a one size fits all mindset. It stands to reason that if students are changing, teachers must change too. It is time to modify teacher education to reflect the demands of the modern classrooms. What’s been implied here is that we aren’t best served by having the smartest, most educated department of education members. The school board, teachers and faculty should try to make an effort to giving all schools the same level of funding regardless of the type of school, so all children have the same opportunities and entitlements. The school should consider everyone and focus on his/her strength instead of focusing on one thing to different students with different ambitions in life and different talents as well.
Teachers only follow what their district tells them to. This holds teachers back from trying to individually help students because they have to keep up with a defective way of educating others. But if us students have the ability to make our own decisions, we have a greater possibility to bring a brighter future and to continue the legacy. Students and teachers should be working on their mindsets and focus on how a student’s intelligence cannot be solely based on test scores and grades, but rather how dedicated the students is in learning. This problem is not something that can be changed overnight we as people should work to solve this problem, with critical thinking and applying our strengths sometime hopefully in the future we can all solve the problem and have students take a step forward to THEIR path.Students of today are 100% of our future so let’s attend to their dreams and there’s no telling what we can achieve. This is a world in which we should all believe where fish are no longer forced to climb trees.
