 CHAPTER1 Introduction Manobo,the name may came from Mansuba from man (person or people) and suba (river), gistriver people. The first Manobo settlers lived in northern Mindanao, at presentManobo tribes can be found at the hillsides and river valleys of thenortheastern part of Cotabato. Manobotribe usually live in the mountainous places. Their tribe is a male dominated,they mostly follow their men than women. “Datu” is one who becomes their tribeleader.

In their tribe like muslim they allowed men to marry more than one aslong as he could provide the needs of his family but then the first wife mustbe remain as head wife.Manobotribe also known as well-skilled in terms of traditional inventions, in ourplace (Senator Ninoy Aquino) we celebrates annually the Sulok Festival torecall and give importance to their tribe they use “Sulok” to catch or harvestcoffee, and among others. Whilein terms of spiritual beliefs like others they also believe in one God thecreator. Nowadayswe couldn’t deny the fact that their tribe becomes more liberated and they werecolonized by some Christians. However, the traditional way of life has not overfor most Manobos, like any other tribal community in Mindanao, the Manobo havefaced many cultural tests in their past and will encounter even more in thefuture. They strive to uphold their values and traditions even while living ina current society, faced with new truths, ready to compete in the moderneconomic world instead of the world of nature.

        Objectives General: Generally this research aims to know aboutManobo tribe cultures and traditions of yesterday, tomorrow and beyond.Specific: Specifically this study aimed to answer thefollowing questions: 1.    Whatare the cultures and traditions of Manobo tribe still in existence?2.    Howimportant those cultures in their tribe?3.    Whatchallenges come to them?
