D1: Discuss different ways of recovering from a disaster. Introduction In this assignment, I will be discussing different methods ofrecovering data from a disaster.
I will be also explaining the advantages ofhaving a backup and how can it help in the case of a disaster. Disaster recovery is the method that is used in all organizationwhen a disaster occurs. This recovery prevents losing your important files fromnatural and negative events. The negative events are malicious viruses attackthe network or the computer system, while natural events are such floods,hurricanes, earthquakes etc. Therefore, a backup system is essential for theorganization, so they can trust it if any disasters happen. For instance, therewas an earthquake where the organization is based and it did not have a backupthis could lead to a massive loss of data. A backup system consists of coping all the files and data that theorganization has on their system, this includes employer’s personal details andtheir works, being transferred to a secure storage.
Having the data backup, itis a huge advantage for the company as they can recover all their files lost asit was back up it. It is crucial to have a disaster backup, but also to keep upto date the backup. The advantage of having a full backup is that when a userasks for their files, it can be easily restored. Another advantage is bybacking all the companies’ documents and files, this will prevent the loss ofthe files that could too many issues such as losing profits that could occur.
Backing up files it is also a cost saving as the software programs that havebeen paid for and lost, having the backup means you would not have to buy thesoftware programs again. Differential BackupAnother method to backup is called ‘Differential backup which is atype of backup that copies all the data changed since the last backup was done.For example, by doing a differential backup, it will store and backup all thefiles that have been modified since the previous full backup. Benefits of adifferential backup are that the backup process is fast, and also when the userwants to restore all their backed up files from this backup system, therestoration time is shorter, overall meaning that the process of backing up andrestoring isn’t time-consuming.
Having differential backups also doesn’t takeup a lot of disk space either as only recent files and being backed up.Restore PointRestore Points should be set all the time, this is basically thesame as a backup but it will not be on an external device, so basically ifsomething becomes corrupt or stopped working completely they would be able toaccess the start-up menu and restore the computer either back to its originalfactory settings or to the last time the computer was functioning properly. Ifit was a small disaster this would be a good way to recover from it. Imaging iswhen there is a clone hard drive and they literally copy the whole hard drivefrom the main one to the clone one. This would stay within a set computer orwithin the system somewhere and whenever a disaster was to occur as long as theclone hard drive was not affected then they can use the clone hard drive as themain one or restore the main hard drive with all the files from the main harddrive.
Incremental backupAn incremental backup is another very useful backup as it backs uponly the recent modification that was done to the previous full backup. Forinstance, in an incremental backup was done on Tuesday, and next was onThursday, the backup will only save the changes done form Tuesday to Thursday.The benefit of having an incremental backup is that is a quick way to back upyour files instead of having done a full back up again. Another advantage isalso saving space, instead of doing full backups, this allows the user tobackup more frequently as it takes less time. Therefore, incremental backup issaving the information that was only changed from the previous full backup, andthe user can choose if he wants to keep all the versions of increments. Whole system replacementsWhole system replacement can be very costly and it is notrecommended, but if your network or computer system is badly damaged or notfunctional then it is required to have the whole system replaced as soon aspossible.
Therefore, the company doesn’t lose any money, some organization alsohave direct contract with a company called Dark Site. This company willduplicate the businesses system once it has failed. Uploading to the cloudHaving a backup of the organization’s network cloud storage orthird party cloud storage it is essential as well as beneficial, because it canbe accessed anywhere in the world as long you have an active internetconnection. For instance, the employee can work from his home therefore if hebeen sick or the company is close for any reason he can still finish the work.
But there is one disadvantage of using this method. You might find comfortableto work at home but your work is unsecure as hackers can steal it easilybecause you’re not using a protected network or essential program to protectyour computer. Tiers ofrecoveryThere are 7 tiers of a system recovery:1) This means that there is no off site datameaning if there is a failure all the data will be gone and there will be noway of recovering it.2) Data backup with no darksite. Backups aretaken but there is no replacement if the system fails.
3) Data backup with a darksite. Copies of thedata are made and there is a centre available to transfer the data to.4) Electronic vaulting.
Mirrored copies of thesystem start are continuously maintained.5) Point in time copies. This means that databackups are the same as what is on the network at the same time.6) Transaction integrity. The backups are made assoon as work is saved to make sure they are identical.7) Zero or near zero data loss.
For very fastsystems where sudden fault could result in some minor data loss.8) Highly automated, business integratedsolution. Now the system will do all the thinking for you. Conclusion In my conclusion, I have talked about security policies and itwould benefit the business in the long run. Although there may be somedisagreements between employees regarding the policies it would all be put intoplace in order to keep the system, employees, and customers safe.
