Dating back to the early centuries, our ancestors have always believed in certain superstitions that will either promote positive outcomes or negative outcomes.
Although these are often refuted by scientific evidence, the majority of individuals still believe that various superstitions may have an impact and affect their daily lives in one way or another. There are negative superstitions, such as how stepping on a crack can break the individual’s mother’s back, or how breaking a mirror will result in the person receiving 7 years of bad luck. On the other hand, there are also positive superstitions, such as how finding a four-leaf clover can bring a person luck and fortune, and how throwing a pinch of salt over the left shoulder can ward off any evil spirits. Being superstitious can be beneficial to an individual and the society they live in as a whole because it leads to overall improvements in a person’s well-being, enhancement in a person’s performance and abilities, and it leads them into taking caution into account before doing anything.Being superstitious has a direct influence on one’s mind in regards to how he or she may think and behave in a certain situation.
Therefore, when a person performs superstitious actions such as knocking on wood or even crossing their fingers, he or she may experience a boost in self-esteem and confidence. From there, any stress that was overwhelming the individual disappears and their motivations become internal and not based on external factors. As a result, the person’s health and energy will improve, which allows them to carry out and accomplish anything that needs to be completed. In essence, these people rely on any belief, irrational or not, in order to provide themselves a delusion of comfort.Another beneficial factor that superstitions play a role in concerns the enhancement of a person’s performance and abilities. An instance in which this phenomenon occurs is how former President of the United States, Barack Obama, used to prepare for upcoming meetings and primaries during his candidacy.
When Barack Obama was running for the presidency in 2008, he noticed that he played basketball on the day he won the Iowa Caucus. However, he did not play basketball on the day in which he lost the primary in New Hampshire. Obama soon noticed this pattern and developed the superstition in which he made an effort to play basketball before any upcoming primaries, so that he may win. By being free of any immense stress, an individual is able to focus on whatever task is at hand and perform that task without any external forces distracting them.
As such, superstitions act as a source of facilitation that allows the person to work in a more effective and efficient manner. Lastly, believing in and carrying out certain superstitions may be beneficial to an individual and the society in which they live in because it leads them to consider caution when approaching any ordeals that may otherwise seem trivial. This leads to a society where progressive generations will gradually live in a safer environment as the taboos and dangers of previous cultures and traditions are informally dealt with. This is carried on through the creation of long-lasting superstitions that will be passed on to future generations, resulting in better living standards. This presents the indirect power that the creation of informal traditions, not regulated by any sort of greater authority, could have in the realm of cultural anthropology. In conclusion, superstitions are beneficial to an individual and the society in which he or she lives in by the fact that it leads to overall improvements in a person’s well-being, enhancement in a person’s performance and abilities, and it leads them to factor caution into account before doing anything. Regarding an individual, he or she may experience an increase in self-esteem and confidence because they are now able to cope with any fear or anxiety that was present before, which ultimately enables them to perform various tasks at the highest potential.
In regards to a society, a proactive body of civilization leads to gradual socioeconomic prosperity in the long run since society becomes more cohesive as a whole. Despite the often associated negative connotation to superstitions, such informal beliefs have mostly aided humankind as a species in continual growth and development.
