Looking back to when I was a child, the moments I treasure the most was the moment my dad first taught me how to lift a paintbrush. I was so fascinated by how my father made bold swipes across the canvas and how art would affect me in different emotional ways. I was astounded and moved by how much these different paintings can affect a person.
I believe that fashion, just like painting, is an art, a form of expression. Designers or the painters are the makers, and lastly, the canvases are the beautiful models and mannequins that the makers use to showcase their creations to the world. The dress that influenced me to fall in love with fashion was an Alexander McQueen gown. It was a silk organza dress constructed almost entirely out of fresh flowers that fell to the floor as the model walked down the runway. The first time I saw it, it actually took my breath away. The Sarabande dress was once showcased at the Met Museum, so others can be as moved by its pure, fragile artistry as I was. It was 2009 when I first saw it, and soon after, I began to immerse myself into the glamorous worlds of fashion. I wanted to pursue my career as a fashion designer as soon as I laid my eyes on it.
Fashion is a very big part of my life. It’s the ultimate artistic expression of individual style, the way of packaging the body and representing your inner and outer self. Each and every day, I was able to articulate myself through the way I dress. It enabled me to bring out my unique personality, to be different, someone I couldn’t have been without the circumstances that clothes allowed me to express my own individuality. If I could combine these two areas together as done in BA Fashion Design, I would be able to pursue a career that I love: the art of fashion and the opportunity to design clothes in the fashion industry. Currently, I am a student taking the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program at Southville International School and Colleges.

On the weekends, I go to a design institute and learn the basics of fashion such as fashion illustration, pattern making, styling, etc. Each module of my course has contributed to the enhancement of skills that I already gained but also allowed me to learn new ones to further my career path. At the age of 15, my strong interest in business has motivated me to fully express myself creatively and start my own clothing line called “Aliyah’s Apparel” in which I retail and design clothes and sell them online. I learned how to interact with customers and to understand what people want to wear and buy.
This experience highlighted the importance of understanding my market when designing clothes and taught me how to work towards a common purpose, and I would like to develop this skill further by studying in this course. In addition to my education, I was given the opportunity to attend and go backstage at the Philippine Fashion Week Spring/Summer collection 2018 as a fashion design assistant. In this role, I must be open-minded and have a keen eye for detail, as well as be up to date with the latest fashion trends and color schemes and prioritize teamwork. By studying in the UK, with its re-claimed and mature fashion industry, I expect to develop into a professional designer with immense potential and to learn from qualified professionals in an environment of people from different countries and cultures.
This will enable me to further develop my creativity and interpersonal skills while encountering viewpoints different from my own. Five years from now, I envision myself completing my bachelor’s degree and plan to move to Dubai and begin working in the fashion industry. My ultimate goal is to play an essential role in the development and maturity of the fashion industry in the Philippines. I expect to be fully-equipped to achieve the goals I have set for myself and serve as an example to other aspiring fashion designers.
