In dystopian texts it often has a theme about important problems in the real world or possible problems in the future. In the text “Hunger games” by Suzanne Collins and “Harrison Bergeron”by Kurt Vonnegut they share a theme in life, people make sacrifices for the people they love and/or their beliefs.
The authors share this theme by using archetypes. In the story Hunger games Katniss is a pre-hero and make sacrifices for her family and in Harrison Bergeron he is a hero and sacrifices himself for his beliefs and others. In the text “Hunger games” by Suzanne Collins she shows us in life, people make sacrifices for the people they love.
According to the text it states that “Leave the district.Run off.Live in the woods. You and I,we could make it,”says Gale.
I don’t know how to respond. The idea is so preposterous.”If we didn’t have so many kids,” he adds quickly. They’re not our kids,of course. But they might as well be.
Gale’s two little brothers and a sister.Prim.And you may as well throw in our mothers, too, because how would they live without us”(9).This text shows that Katniss is sacrificing for her family because she and Gale could make it on their own in the woods and escape district 12 but doesn’t and thinks about the consequences she will leave for her family if they escape and shows that she cares and love her family. Also in the text it states that “Once, because I had to,and three times for tesserae for grain and oil for myself, Prim, and my mother.
In fact, every year I have needed to do this. And the entries are cumulative. So now,at the age of sixteen,my name will be in the reaping twenty times”(13).
This text shows that she is sacrificing for her family because she takes tesserae for herself,Prim and her mother which gives her three extra entries in the reaping each year and increases her chances of getting pick for the Hunger games. The author uses Katniss in the story as a pre-hero to develop the theme because even though she isn’t a hero she shows characteristics of a hero like being caring, selflessness and having courage and made sacrifices for her family.
