In not willing to leave and would rather

In the book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, the main character Guy Montag is a firefighter that burns books in a futuristic dystopian society. We learn in the beginning of the book that the country has many social problems like how citizens don’t interact with each other, depend heavily on technology, and don’t read books. The government in this society have outlawed books and if an individual is found reading one they would be persecuted as a criminal . Also as a result of a dystopian society many people suffer severe depression and suicide is a very common occurrence. As the book goes along we are introduced to new characters, Clarisse and Faber, that change Montag’s outlook on life and society as a whole.

Montag in the beginning of the book enjoys his job as a firefighter and even shows how much he enjoys by saying, “It was a pleasure to burn.It was a special pleasure to see things eaten, to see things blackened and changed.”(1) One day when Montag is at work ,his firehouse receives a call that somebody has been hiding illegal books in their and that they need to come to destroy them. Upon arrival the firefighters approach the house and are met by a lady that is trying to defend her books. She tells them that she is not willing to leave and would rather burn with her books than let them go.

After a short period of time the team decided to set the entire house on fire and burn the woman alive since they didn’t have the  patience to deal with the lady.As the flames died down Montag was forever scarred and finally starts to question why someone would die for books and if what he does as a job is morally right. Also in the beginning of the book we are introduced to Clarisse McClellan, a seventeen year old girl, that helps Montag realize his inner sadness.Clarisse was basically Montag’s only friend. She teaches him that it’s okay to be different and have your own opinions.

Later on in the story Clarisse was hit by a speeding car and dies, which makes Montag extremely sad. In the middle of the story we are introduced to Faber, a retired English teacher, that also helps Montag realize his problems. The first problem that Montag realizes is that he really doesn’t love his wife Mildred because he thought of what he would do if she died and he realized he wouldn’t be sad if she had died.
