Introduction: (Attention Getter) More commonly than people may believe, the statement “No animals were harmed in the making of this movie…” is false. There are multiple cases of animals becoming severely ill or even dying on movies sets due to mistreatment. These negative impacts on the animals are generally not seen by the public and are kept hidden from them. So, animals should not be used in the entertainment industry because training and putting the animals into these situations is a form of animal crueltyPreview: Today I will be discussing reasons people are for and against using animals for entertainment purposes.I. Reasons against using animals for entertainment purposes A. The film, A Dog’s Purpose and the danger the dogs in the film were put in.
1. Shortly before the film A Dog’s Purpose was released this January, it received a large amount of backlash due to a video that surfaced of a dog being forced into rapid waters on set. 2. The American Humane organization reviewed the footage and said they were “disturbed and concerned by the footage… when the dog showed signs of resistance to jumping in the water, the scene should have been stopped.” (Gonzales, p.
1, 2017) B. Animal rights advocacy group PETA called for a boycott of the film right before it was set to release (Gonzales, p.1, 2017) 1.
Actor Josh Gad, who voices the titular dog in the film, said in a letter posted to Twitter that the “disturbing” footage left him “shaken and sad.” (Gonzales, p.1, 2017) 2. The red-carpet premiere scheduled for Los Angeles this weekend was cancelled. Amblin Entertainment and Universal Pictures said they are investigating. (Menon, p. 1, 2017) C.
These investigations were carried out in February of this year. 1. The report by the American Humane Association confirmed that there were at least two incidents in which a dog was forced into churning water and the dog was submerged once. (American Humane, 2017) 2. An article published by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) noted that, “Sadly, such abuse appears to be the norm, not the exception, in the entertainment industry, where animal suffering is just “business as usual” for humans trying to make a buck.
” (Prater, p.1, 2017)Transition: With all of this in mind, I would like to move on to the reasons people may see using animals for entertainment purposes as a good thing.II. Reasons for using animals for entertainment purposes A. The author’s statement about his film 1. The author of A Dog’s Purpose, W. Bruce Cameron, stated that “For the film, I selected Gavin Polone as producer because he is a known animal activist–he would never allow anything bad to happen to any animal while he was on set.
But he wasn’t on set that day. And so, the dog, Hercules, was mishandled.” (Cameron, p.1, 2017) 2. Cameron also noted that he is a forgiving person that the lesson we can learn from this is that even more strict monitoring needs to be in place for animals on movie sets (Cameron, p.1, 2017) B.
The stars of the film also made statements about the released video. 1. Dennis Quaid, one of the stars of the film, said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that “the video does not tell the entire story,” and that the animals “were treated with the greatest respect and care and compassion.” (Victor, p.1, 2017) 2. KJ Apa, who was one of the main stars of the film, said, “”Every time I was on set, I witnessed a production team that went to amazing lengths to ensure that the dogs were treated with the utmost respect and love.
” (KJ Apa, 2017) C. It is believed that the video that was released was “misleading and edited.” 1. Although it can be seen in the video that the dog was forced into the water, they claim that he wasn’t and the wo clips were simply recorded at different times. (Victor, p.1, 2017) 2. “This was a piece of video that was shot during the making of this. Some unknown person at the time.
He also spliced, edited and manipulated that to make it look as if the dog was being abused. The dog had been in that water happily, and even afterwards too.” (Victor, p.1, 2017)Conclusion: In conclusion, no animal should ever be put in a situation in which their lives are in danger for the benefit of people in the entertainment industry gaining an extra buck. These animal’s lives are more valuable than some money made off of movie ticket sales.
By using these animals in movies and television and allowing them to be treated in a careless and harmful way, we are allowing animal cruelty to occur with no restraint. So, animals should not be used in the entertainment industry because it is animal cruelty to put them through the process of making a film or show.
