Many of the things that Shakespeare lists in his sonnet are still true today. The meaning of this sonnet is to explore the reasons behind the injustices he sees.The Sonnet’s first quatrain is about evil doing bad things to the innocent and helping those that don’t deserve it. Shakespeare says in the first line “Tired with all these, for restful death I cry,” He means that in life there are a lot of bad things from which he would like to escape seeing, such as in the next line where he begins the list of things that he would no longer like to see, stating “As to behold desert a beggar born,” Shakespeare means that good people will be born to live in poverty rather than bad people, which is caused by evil. He then goes on in line 3 to talk about undeserving people getting everything they want, saying “And needy nothing trimmed in jollity,”. Finally in the last line of the first quatrain he says “And purest faith unhappily forsworn,”, this means that people make promises that they never meant to keep. In the second quatrain shakespeare talks about people being wronged by others.In line 5 he says “And gilded honor shamefully misplaced,” this means that the respect and honor that some deserve are given to the wrong people.

In lines 7 he says “And maiden virtue rudely strumpeted,” this means that the public perception of a person was wrongfully corrupted by lies. Shakespeare ends this quatrain in line 8 by saying “And strength by limping sway disablèd,” he means that some people in powerful positions use their power to take advantage of others. In the 3rd and final quatrain shakespeare talks about control and corruption. He begins in line 9 saying “And art made tongue-tied by authority”, this means that the government or other powers silence artists that they disagree with. Then in line 10 he says “And folly, doctor-like, controlling skill,”, this represents control, in the way that a patient will follow a doctor’s orders without question. Shakespeare end the 3rd quatrain in line 12 by saying “And captive good attending captain ill.”, which means that good has been captured and evil has taken control. Shakespeare then moves on to the couplet where he says “Tired with all these, from theses would I be gone, Save that to die, I leave my love alone.
“, this brings the poem to a close, hitting back on the first line where he talks about how he wishes for restful death, but then in this last line realizes that he would leave behind the person he loves.
