Joshua Harris Dr.
Yingqin Liu English Composition II 1/29/18 Net Neutrality Big companies all want to get your money by any means necessary. There are government laws to stop companies from controlling everything. The net neutrality was made to protect consumer on the internet. “Net neutrality is the principle that individuals should be free to access all content and applications equally, regardless of the source, without Internet Service Providers discriminating against specific online services or websites. In other words, it is the principle that the company that connects you to the internet does not get to control what you do on the internet.
“(https://www.publicknowledge.org) Net neutrality should not be repealed. The internet should not be controlled by big companies it should remain a free place. Net neutrality is important for consumers on the internet. First off net neutrality helps small businesses start up.
“No net neutrality means internet providers can have more say other what sort of service they offer. They would have the power to block rival’s websites, for example.” (http://metro.
co.uk) This means big companies can pay to stop smaller businesses from getting websites. Companies don’t need to improve if they don’t have competition. This is also, against freedom of speech, no net neutrality means that freedom of speech will have some problems too. No, net neutrality means that internet providers can make people pay more for the websites they want. “The big companies wrest control of the Internet from the American people and hand it over to existing Internet service providers (ISPs) like Comcast, AT and Verizon, empowering them to generate new profits by restricting access.
” (https://www.usatoday.com) This means they can make people buy internet packages just like they do with cable packages. They just want all your money. The internet is a place where you can go to whatever website you want.
If net neutrality ends a stranger might be controlling your internet experiences. If that happens there nothing you can do to stop it. By repealing net neutrality, the government is going to let that happen because they are being paid by the big companies. So, you can’t do what you want online. One of the counterargument against net neutrality is that the law is out dated and needs to be updated.
They say that net neutrality needs to be updated to make it more in line with other laws. This seems fine, but big companies already have control over what thoughts laws are supposed to be protecting. “Telephone service had begun crossing state lines by this time in 1934, and a unified body for regulating it and the companies that provided it (which were indeed acknowledged monopolies) was called for: hence, the FCC.” (https://techcrunch.
com) The government just let the big companies do this, honestly someone was probably handed a lot of money. Another counterargument is that net neutrality is a way for the government to impeded on the freedom of the internet markets. Enforcing net neutrality would halt the growth of the internet markets. However, the problem with this that it only effects the big companies. All of the arguments against net neutrality are supporting big companies and the people who are say these things are probably being payed to say it.
Right now, the internet is a place where you don’t have to worry about people trying to control what you do. But, if net neutrality disappears then that all will chance. If net neutrality goes away big companies will take advantage of consumers and internet providers will charge people extra for the web sites they want. Net neutrality is crucial to protect people online.
