Next, the working environment will influence the decision makingwhether to stay or leave the current organization. A positive workingenvironment is an environment that promotes a positive engagement betweenstaffs. These good engagements can build cooperation, teamwork as well asrespect and sense of wellbeing. Based on a research conducted by Kenny, Reeve, & Hall (2016) among the nurses in Australia, 31% of the respondents of the studyshown dissatisfied with the work environment. This issue can cause the nursesto leave the organization and lead to the nurse shortage.
Besides, in Malaysia,the job satisfaction of the nurses who work in the specialized unit is highercompared to the general ward (Ramoo et al., 2013). It may be due to the lack of engagement between nurses in thebusy general ward. It can lead to nurse turnover. The change anddifference can be the reasons of nursing staffing issue. There is changes occurif working in a new place. The change and difference happen in almost partsincluding the environment, workload, payment and benefits.
They need tocooperate with new people that have different characteristics from the previousone and get use to the new environment. Nurses also have the possibility toleave the organization due to the payment received are not reasonable to theworkload. 28% of the Australian nurses who involve in the research by Kenny et al. (2016), portrayed dissatisfaction towards the hours of working and wages.
The time spanproperties of the transition theory can be related to the nursing shortageissue by the ability of the nurses to adapt with the environment. Besides that,as moving over time, the nurses have the aim for their education andprofessional development. These targets are good and really beneficial for thenursing profession. However, some of the nurses will leave the hospital to beinvolved into teaching and research and obtained the career opportunity abroad (AbuAlRub et al., 2013).
These leaving nurses provide a shortage in delivering care in thehospital. The transitionthat happened has its own critical points and event. The critical events thathappen throughout the working experience sometimes can influence nurses toturnover form the nursing profession. For those who are strong in facing thedifficulties will survive.
Therefore, it can be understood that the propertiesof the transition theory can help in determining the factors that involve innurse shortage. 7.0 CONCLUSION As a conclusion, the transition theory by Meleis can be applies isobtaining information regarding the nursing shortage. It is really hoped thatthis assignment can help in providing information pertaining to the theoreticalframework that has been applied in other research related to nurse retention.The transition theory used the properties of awareness, engagement, change anddifference, time span and critical points as the evaluation method.
