Physical Development StagesChildrenplay an important role in the society, because they are the next generation andwill be part of decision maker in the future. As parents, educator or caretaker, we must contribute in equipping them for a more challenger future and provide support necessary to their development.Because of they usually believe and rely on us, their first learning experiencedeeply affect their future physical, cognitive, emotional and socialdevelopment.
So, improving the early childhood lives is crucial for them andthe best choice that a parent can do for their future success. Childdevelopment is in fact, a normal progression of a child from birth to adultwhile growing up by obtaining and improving knowledge, skills and behaviors;however, Children follow parents step or practice principles giving bya family member, this is the reason that as parent, we need to guide them andprovide necessary support to their development. In general, child developmentinvolves the following areas: physical, socio-emotional and/or cognitivedevelopment for the stage of development prenatal, infants/toddlers, earlychildhood, middle childhood, adolescence.
However, physical development isan important process of child development start from infancy and continue intolate adolescent, which includes absolutely; gross and fine motor skills andpuberty. In fact, as an informed parent of different stage of physical development(development ages 0-18) I ensure that my children have the best possible fulfillment.Physical Development Infant / ToddlerThephysical development of infant and toddler is in fact a rapid bodily changethat occurs from conception until two years old. According to specialist, during”the first 4 weeks of life, generally, most babies weight more than 5 pounds, while male babies are generally slightly heavier than female babies”. And thiscontinue during the first 2 years.
It is obvious that the physical growth israpid, because everyone can see that, from birthweightto the infant’s first birthday, generally the weight double.Fine motor and grossmotor infantSmall muscles are in fact refers to Fine motor development andthe larger muscle refers to gross. Accordingto specialist, “from 0 to 3 months a babies’ can focus eyes on an object, raiseand turn their head, smile, watch their own hands and so on. By 3 to 6 months, recognize familiar voice, roll over, sit withhelp and looking for toys, try to reach for toys and roll over, etc. Beginning9 to 12months a baby should be able to crawl, climb, begin steps and startdrinking in cup and appropriate bottle”.
Because a child need parents’ supportto develop normally, Therefore, I did encourage my children to crawl and walk, movetoward me and so on. Brain DevelopmentAs physical development, the brain development of fetal andneonatal as is also rapid. Some areas of the brain which are responsible forbasic function develop and then follow by the biggest areas. The neural Tube that is a hollow structure from which the brain and spinalcord form starts about 4 Weeks after conception; it willdefinitely later develop in Centralnervous system which is the complex of nerve tissues that controls theactivities of the body. From around 6 weeks to 10 weeks, the neuron form,in the neural tube, migrating to the top of the tube where they form the firstlayer of Cerebral cortex which isthe gray matter that forms the top portion of the brain. The brain continues todevelop until final step. Because, Iknow the brain development is possibly the most important organ in my childlife, I do my best to provide loving cares and stimulation such touching, playtime, singing and reading to improve my child brain development.Physical Development Early childhoodEarlychildhood, (2 to 6) infant and toddler grow quickly both physically andcognitively.
They become suddenly taller, potential learner and adamantlyasking questions. It’s clear that children lose baby weight and seem look likeathletic. Usually baby has chubby face, trunk and big limbs, but around 3,there is obviously a big change in all those areas; chubbiness, limbs and trunkgrow longer. As everyone can notice, a child’s physical development improvesstarting preschool; this in fact a big step for the child because of peer groupand many different activities. Gross motor and fine motorGrossmotor development concerns to physical skills that practice body movementswhich is included the entire body. Gross motor control involves also balanceand stability with such movement as kicking, running, jumping, hopping, skipping, throwing, catching and galloping. As I know that being active isimportant for my children body, I teach healthy habit to them and involve indaily activities with them.
Coordinationbetween small muscles and wrist are considering as fine motor development.During the development process, children have the ability to self-help andmanipulate small objects such as scissors and writing tools. Fine motor skillsgenerally follow gross motor development.
The fine motor development involves also independence in manipulateclothing; dressing and undressing themselves. I was surprise by my daughterwhen she came back to preschool and said mommy: “I can take off my clothes bymyself. Preschool is definitely a perfect place for a child to learn and practice.Brain DevelopmentThevisual area located in the occipital area is developed early and reaches itspeak within 4 months.
As long as the visual are and the whole occipital lobedevelop during early childhood, children are better at processing, recognizing and remembering visual patternsthat are more complex. And the ability to recognize specifics faces are andemotional expressions from faces are improving by the age 6-8 years, at thesame time plasticity in the visual area is decreasing. The temporal lobes which are the language development, childrenmake significant progress in learning language. Vocabulary, grammar isimproving according to their environment. So, the frontal lobe and the temporallobe allows them to transform the language they hear into a language that thecan speak. As the improvement of language, hand-eye coordination, and thecoordination of many other functions in the brain, the development continues inthe Parietal lobes.
The parietal lobes begin to use more energy and become moreactive after 2-3 years of age. The frontal lobes: Heavy growth happens between3-6 years of old. The frontal lobes are responsible for organizing and planningbehavior, so children can participate in group settings like preschool andkindergarten. Even though my child is in kindergarten, I do my job as a motherto boost every step on my child development. Physical Development Middle childhood Even though, physical development is anatural process in every child’s life, track every step of development of achild as a parent, might have a positive effect. Physical development in the early middle school is characterized byconsiderable variations in growth patterns, includingimportant numbers of children experience overweightproblem. Depend of your gender or origin, your growth patterns may be different. In general, At theage of 9 girl is essentially the same size as boy.
But after 10, most girlsexperience a growth spurt while mostboys experience the same growth spurtafter 10; and then grow faster, taller and heavier by the age of 14. In this period also, the brain and nervoussystem develop which leads to a body grow slow during the early part of middlechildhood. A growth spurt occurs in the brain at 8 or 9, so that the organ isnearly adult size. After 10, the brain shrinks in some way, but still gaining glial cells and myelin. Overall, the brain and system developments continue duringthe middle school while further complex behavioral and cognitive potential become possible.Gross-motor and Fine motor skillsBothgross-motor and fine motor skillsare coordinate across the middle school. Plays that involve fine and grossmotor development skills have a huge impact on development during this step.
Accordingto Piaget, playing in this phase in in fact related to cognitive development becausechildren begin to use logic and reasoning in order to achieve their goal. Grossmotor skills are engaged in large bodily movements and fine motor skillsinvolve small bodily movement. In my opinion, this the best time to involve inchild’s education and build the bridge to success.
Atthis age, strength improves, and children are enjoying running, jumping, leaping, throwing, catching, climbing, andbalancing. Boys seems to have greater strength than girls; and continue to gainstrength across middle school and adolescence while girls strength increasingin the early adolescence. Physical activity is recommended by health officialfor children. In fact, having a regular physical activity will help in weight control, healthy lung and cardiovascular health, therefore,I ensure that they are active.
Physical Development Adolescent Adolescenceis a period of trouble for most parent, psychological changes, but it’s also aperiod of physical milestones for teenagers, rapid growth and maturity. Thepick of puberty occurs at around 10 or 11 for female and 11 or 12 for males, usually puberty is complete for girls by ages 15 to 17 while for boys, itusually by ages 15 to 17. The body parts also develop for both males andfemales. However, female’s growth spurt earlier than males.
There is anacceleration growth in different body part (head, hands, feet) and at differenttimes. Generally, before puberty, there is no distinction between boys andgirls regarding body fat and muscles, but during puberty the difference is thatboy develop faster muscle while girls has an increase amount of fat. Thedevelopment is not only occurred in physical, but also in hormonal change andsexual maturation.
During this time, the adrenal glands and the sex glandmature which are respectively processes know as adrenarche and gonadarche. Gross-motor and Fine motor skillsYoumight also notice change about both gross-motorand fine motor skills. A teenager, might have hard time using their finemotor skills in case of injuries. If for any reason, you have doubt about yourchild development, look for help, because other reason can cause his/her to lose fine-motorskills injuries, such as the brain or spinal cord or nervous system diseases.
Brain Development Adolescent.Childrenbody go through physical changes which are obvious to everyone. However, adolescent brain development is lessobvious for most of us, but the brain is still changing and maturing well intoadulthood. The brain is in fact apart of the body that is control the body’s activities that boost teenagersconfront a lot of challenge and stress most of the time.Accordingto research adolescent brain is still growing until adulthood and immature, also develop at distinct speed depending of the child.
Important change occursin the gray matter which is “the darker tissue of the brain and spinal cord, consisting mainly of nerve cell bodies and branching dendrites”. Like the braindevelopment during the early childhood, there is an increasing number of neural connection or synapse, but boysseem to show an increase of gray matter rather than girl. The prefrontal cortex is an important area in planning, judgment, and decision making and inhibiting impulsive responding. As everyone notice, adolescents react quickly and emotionally to things, the reason is because ofthe hormone. They can’t really control their emotions, as an explanation tothat, the amygdala that is a part ofthe brain’s temporal lobe stimulatedadolescents’ emotions. And finally, thedopamine which is a “chemical released by neurons (nerve cells) to sendsignals to other nerve cells”. It is in fact stressful stimuli.
Dependingthe level of the dopamine in the brain, adolescents might react different.ConclusionThereal job of a parent is to provide support, encouragement and access toactivities to your child that enable you child to success and also mastering keydevelopment task for confidence in everyday life. Record and track every bad behavior, abnormallyand notice change about your child. Talk to your child doctor if younotice any change about his/her development, seeking for help in case of yourchild does not listen to you or does not reach your expectations in order to take educational familyleadership.
As a matter of fact, you have to impact your children positively;their life depends on you, do your best to thrive on Routine. This is our responsibilityto increase their brain power and boost their development. For me and mostly for everyone, a child learns basic rules, regulations, normsand values of society from his family first, because familyeducation is the earliest education that children could receive, and parentsare the first teacher. Talk to them about your expectations, tips fordevelopment. Because of course nowadays, life today is tough; we have too manysingle parent choices that require hard working and personal responsibility, wetend to fail to our job which is absolutely educate, teaching values, trackdevelopment step. By doing well your job as a parent, you will contribute tothe wellbeing of the society.
