Technologytoday plays a big role within our daily lives. This technology is somethingthat comes in many shapes and forms and has many functionalities. For example,it can be a referral to the microscopes etc. that are used within thescientific field, or it can be referred to as the computers and phones that areused by consumers every day. Technology today is also a combination of arts andscience.
An art refers to the different types of expression that utilizes theskills of creativity and imagination to create specific objects. Whilst thesciences are the practical application of the study of both the natural and thephysical world. This is achieved through experimental activities carried out bypeople within this field of work. These two ways which have combined to createa new idea has changed the way in which objects containing electroniccomponents are viewed today. Due to theadvancements in technology in the past 20-30 years it has both enabled mankindto create but also limit knowledge that is produced.
Knowledgeis an important term that arises within this question when one reads it. Herewhat is meant by it is the information that is produced by different procedureswhich enable mankind to gain more knowledge to be able to pass it on. A good examplehere is that with the arts, it has created information that has been passed on forseveral generations that it is done through painting through the use of abrush.
This brush would be used as a mean to spread out the paint (oil andcolor mixed together) and be able to create images. This is one example whichcan be said that knowledge has undertaken. Without any type of knowledgeavailable, technology would not have been possible in the first place. This isbecause of the fact that these are developments upon old ideas/ information of experimentswhich were carried out years ago.
Firstlywhen it comes to technology, it can as mentioned before produce knowledge. Before understanding this, what must be known is what is technology? Technologyis the industrial application of both the sciences and the arts to help makeproducts which will help mankind. With this one can assume that it is used forthe creation of devices and/or scientific tools. The statement says thattechnology enables production and limitation of knowledge.
When looking at thefirst part, it produces knowledge. A good example for this is with companieslike Apple Inc. They make devices like phones, computers and tablets.
To makethose products they need knowledge. This knowledge is obtained when theirdepartment and research and development come up with a design that will be thenewest to what they had made before. Then they, as a company, need to havedesigners that will then design how the phone will look so that then it will beable to suit the time it is in. Therefore, this shows that technology has anaspect that enables to produce knowledge. Whentechnology had developed over the years, mankind had to adapt so that theycould allow and understand all the items that were being released. In otherwords some things that were released actually had negative effects upon thenewer generation. The thinking processes would be much more limited, andtechnology would be the answer to anything.
A good example for this is thecalculator. This is a device that enables for anyone who has access to it toeasily calculate mathematical problems when needed. This used to be verydifferent because people actually needed to calculate it by hand and with theirmind if they wanted to know this problem. In other words it required creativityand understanding of the whole process. Due to such a development it has hadnegative effects on the newer generation. They automatically go to this devicewhen they cannot do it themselves. Rather than challenge themselves and try todo this, they jump towards this type of technology so that they can easilysolve the mathematical problem which they are facing.
This takes away thecreativity and the skill that we once used to possess.Art onceused to be forged from the hands of the masters. They would/still paint on acanvas what their eye would capture. Painters like Rembrandt would paint peopleand places in ways in which he saw fit. They would turn out to be one of themost famous paintings known today. In this case it is the Night Watch.
Technology has both negatively and positively impacted the ways that thetraditional arts would be made. Here the positive impact is that it has allowedfor precise analysis of paintings with the use of mathematical algorithms.Saleh and Elgammal of the university of Rutgers University New Jersey, havecreated a machine that could and would recognize the type of art and the typeof style it uses. This is a creation that is very beneficial towards youngerartists due to the fact that it will enable them to be able to recreatepaintings almost exactly the same as the masters once did. Not only that butthrough these systems, it will allow for the restoration processes done by professionalconservators of arts in galleries to be more precise. They will be able to knowthe different type of strokes that were taken and the style that was used.
Inother words identifying the fine arts. But with the development of technology,it has also impacted humans in a negative way. This is due to the introductionof the photo camera. This type of art is known today as photography. The camerais a simple way of capturing pieces of arts or different important events.
Theonly thing the user has to do is to press the shutter button so that it cancatch the moment and save it onto the memory card. Photography takes away boththe creative skills and the thinking skills due to the fact that there does notneed to be any type of movement within the hand to be able to create art. It isas simple as clicking one button.
The arts have become much simpler to createand nowadays many individuals have access to this to be able to put thesemoments into their memories. Almost everyone walks around with a phone. Thesehave built in cameras that can be taken out at any moment to snap a shot ofsomething which the individual finds important.
The question that arises fromthis is how do phones and cameras affect the way in which the arts are seentoday? They are seen both negatively and positively because on one side they doshow the jump that was made in technological advancements but on the other handthese devices have taken away the creative and thinking skills that the humanrace used to be more dominant at. Technologyboth produces and limits knowledge due to the fact that there are devices thatexist that create by the manufacturing process or the certain function that itneeds to carry out. It also limits due to the fact that it has functions thatlimit the thinking skills and the creative that used to be applied without them.As stated in the paragraphs above. Personally I think that technology bothproduces and limits the knowledge which is produced. It produces when we lookat the industry but limits when we look at the limitations that some of the deviceshave towards the human race.
Are we responsible for knowing when knowledge isproduced and when it limits depending on which device we use?
