The Emancipation Proclamation was an executive order by President Lincoln issued on January 1, 1863 declaring that all the slaves in the Confederate states are free.
This executive order actually turned the civil war in to a war which was being fought against the slavery in United States. But this proclamation was not able to free all the slaves in different rebellion states, this was achieved later on in 1865 when the thirteenth amendment was passed in to the constitution.During the Civil war the South’s economy totally depended on slavery because most of the labour work was carried out by the slaves.
And as we know southern states’ economy was an agriculture based economy. For farming the southerners needed labour force and since all the slaves were freed because of the president’s executive orders the south’s economic backbone shattered. When the slaves were freed were invited to join the armed forces and give union a hand in winning the civil war which eventually happened as the north eventually ended up having around 200,000 african americans fighting for them. Many of the ex-slaves enjoyed their freedom by going back to their birthplace, educating their children, building churches and finding jobs. But the white southerners did not want the ex-slaves to live their lives to the fullest and in order to do that they introduced black codes in 1865 which discriminated the ex-slaves as to the whites.
These codes prohibited blacks from jury duty and right to vote and implemented a high annual taxes on blacks as well. The main agenda behind these codes was to force the ex-slaves back to the farms. Bibliography: James L. Roark. The American Promise: A Concise History 5th ed. (page 402, 427) To In my opinion the civil war was inevitable because of many reasons but I would like to mention the main reasons which made it absolutely inevitable.
First of all both north and south had totally different views towards slavery. The north was not depended on slavery for its economy because it mainly focused on industrialization. On the other hand the south was totally depended on the slavery to fuel its economy and it also thought that without the slavery the south will not be able to keep up with the north.
Both the north and south pointed at the Declaration of Independence as a proof against or for slavery, respectively. The southern states considered all men were equal but the blacks but the northern states considered everyone equal, including the blacks.Mainly the reason that made war inevitable was the Compromise of 1850. These laws were passed in 1850 to resolve the dispute over the spread of slavery in the states. These laws made the state of california a free state. But rather than solving the issues between the two sides (i.e.
north and south) it worked as fuel to the fire. The laws lead to the enforcement of The fugitive law under which if you captured a runaway slave you were rewarded and this made the northerners furious since they were anti-slavery.Lastly the secession of the southern states after the election of Abraham Lincoln as president because these states were not happy with the policies of Lincoln, can be also held accountable as one of the reasons for inevitability of the civil war. After the civil war, America had to stand up on its feet as one nation together. All the freed slaves were to be incorporated into the nation with the passage of the thirteenth, fourteenth and the fifteenth amendment, ongoing demand of equality for blacks and the joining of confederate states into the union again.
