Thebinomial name of Bimble Box is Eucalyptus Populnea.
The other common name ofthis endemic tree of Australia is Popular Box. Found in central South Wales tocoastal and central Queensland, it can reach up to 25 meters. The tree isextensively grown in arid and semi-arid regions of open-forest communities. Thetree gets the name Bimble Box because of the shape of the leaves. Rounded,glossy dark green leaves are the specialties of these species. BimbleBox has larger branches and its bark is persistent on its trunk.
Grey withwhitish patches and fibrous-flaky (box) are the other peculiarities of thiswood. The flowering period of this tree is during February –March. Botanist,Ferdinand von Mueller described this species at the first time in 1858. Latinadjective of this tree is populnea. The other common names of bimble box arewhite box, shiny-leaf box, nankeen gum, red box, bimbil box, rounded leaf box,and bimbil. In 1990, Kenneth Hill and Lawrie Johnson described and named it asthe subspecies E. populnea and the subspecies is bimbil.
Hybridsof this species are recorded from Queensland. Hybrids between E. populnea andE. coolibah are recorded within New South Wales.
The species is abundantlygrown on the New South Wales western plains, north from Pooncarie andNarrandera. Themost favorable habitat for Bimble Box is red soils with a clay loam and sandyloam texture. Therefore, they are found in areas that are sandier and reliablywatered. The same climate and soil condition is preferable for gum coolibah,white cypress pine, and grey box. So, bimble box grows in association withthese trees.
It is not so common on sandplains with deep loamy soils. Thoughnot common, it is grown with mulga (Acacia Aneura) and Ironwood (Acaciaexcels). Goodquality honey is produced by the flowers of Bimble box trees.
Though the supplyis very limited, it is very dense and the color is pale amber. The timber ofbimble box is very hard and durable. It is extremely useful for constructionwork and fence posts.
But, working with bimble box timber is not so easy. It issusceptible to the attack of white ants. Thefamily of Bimble Box is Myrtaceae and its Genus is Eucalyptus. It has a wavyfigure grain and the texture is fine.
The timber is not resistant to termite.The life expectancy of this tree is over 25 years. Apart from engineering andconstruction, the wood is used for making musical instruments. Generally, thegrowth rings are absent in this timber, but it is visible in somespecimens.
