The ingenuity and deftness of Mathematics have mesmerized

The ingenuity and deftness of Mathematics have
mesmerized me from the age of 7. Back then when my father used to take me to
his office, I used to watch him calculate demanding business accounting on the
calculator, which always fascinated me. The passion for the subject grew over
time that made me strengthen my mathematics skill via various interesting games
like Ken Ken, problem-solving Puzzles, Rubik’s cube, Tower of Hanoi and Sudoku.
I believe that these fun games have enhanced my critical thinking, analytical
thinking, and problem-solving skills.

Mathematics has always been my strength which I
realized prior to my A Levels; but after studying further Mathematics, I was
amazed at how principles and theorems were proved with the help of Mathematical
Induction. Along with the great zest to solve complex numerical in class, I
have also focused on enriching my mathematics skill by participating in
International Kangaroo Mathematics Contest that boosted my confidence and prove
my mettle. Moreover, I have taken an initiative of conducting problem-solving
sessions in which I along with my classmate are training students for the
topics tested in NMTC (National Mathematics Talent Contest) and IMO
(International Mathematics Olympiad) Camp. Furthermore, I have been teaching
mathematics as private tuition for last one and half years that developed my
leadership and lateral thinking skills to tackle the individual queries with
new ideas and approach towards it. I have also conducted the A Levels
Mathematics Paper 3 Workshop in A Level School that has encouraged me to study
the subject in great depth and recognize my mathematical potential. The feeling
of contentment while solving a challenging numerical has firmly secured my
decision to pursue the subject, professionally.

The utilization of mathematics, in reality, has
constantly entranced me. Arithmetic goes about as a foundation from which
economical aspects advance, such as Integration being used to find the Gini
coefficient. Moreover, as an avid reader, the inspiration from Paul Zeitz’s
renowned book “The Art and Craft of Problem Solving” helped to improve my
critical thinking and analytical skills, and in doing so, urged me to apply the
ideologies to specialized fields such as calculus and algebra.

After studying the four components of A-levels
Mathematics, I can truthfully say my interest was most peaked by pure
mathematics; specifically calculus. The way two-dimensional questions can be
progressed to further dimensions and can then be extended to that of an imaginary
realm seized me and led me to believe that such a principle is widely used in
Economics as well.

Additionally, studying Further Mathematics and
Economics has confirmed my utmost passion for it and has cemented my desire to
proceed my higher studies along the same line. Economics is a core aspect of
today’s society, further illustrated by ongoing curial economic affairs. The
effects of government policy in trying to achieve its economic objectives
became apparent to me over the years. As a result, I have tried to study and
practice it beyond the constraints of the classroom. For instance, I discovered
the captivating application of economic behavior and differential calculus on
“Urban areas and Economic Development” and “Probability and Linear
Algebra. Thus, these have given me advantageous experiences and consolidated my
priority to study BSc Economics and Mathematics at LUMS University.
   

In addition, amidst the A-level phase, I
discovered that Economics has its deep roots in Mathematics. The theories of economics
became more interesting when calculus and mathematical models were involved in
it. Economics, in reality, changed my perspective of looking at the world. By
reading “Financial Times” and “Economic Times”, it had actually broadened the
horizon on how things work globally like ceteris paribus, measure several
things at a different level and money circulation in an economy. Moreover, it
also helped me to study the current performance of world economy through
different features of market and government’s role in an economy. Practically,
the study of problem of scarcity and choice has influenced my decision making
skill. Now I try my best to make a rational choice in connection with my
day-to-day lifestyle.

On the other hand, I have also looked for the academic
opportunities to polish my leadership and interpersonal skill and therefore,
participated in Beacon Model United Nation 2017 and Hypercube Science Olympiad
2017 organized by The City School (PAF Chapter). Moreover, I also was a part of
LUMS Psi-Fi IX hoisted by SPADES that helped me to strengthen my capabilities
in terms of teamwork, determination and strong commitment in a scientific
domain. Moreover, I also played a distinct role as a Project manager in
Mathematics Olympiad (ECO-Fest 2017-2018) organized by my school in which I was
responsible for the arrangement and successful execution of the event that
added value to my credentials.

While exploring my options for undergraduate
within Pakistan, I found that programme of Mathematics and Economics at LUMS
intriguing. As it is known that Economics and Mathematics both have a multitude
influence in the real world which would equip an individual to be more
productive in today’s modern era of technology and commerce. By studying the
joint course offered in Mathematics and Economics at LUMS, I am confident that
it would provide me with a chance to build a strong base to my career growth.
For this, I am looking forward to being the part of LUMS where the
ability to develop not only sound academics but professional skills and
proficiency is furnished. Another factor that drives me to get enrolled in LUMS
is certainly to study in an environment which would stimulate my interest
productively in order to harness the possible risk faced by my family business.

Conclusively, my past life seems like a roller
coaster ride to me. As I look back, it has had many ups and downs which taught
me many worthy lessons: to learn, innovate and adapt. I believe that the
completion of the degree in BSc Mathematics and Economics at LUMS would provide
me with a chance to efficiently utilize numeracy skill, strong determination
and commitment, and diversified range of knowledge in a manner that is crucial
to the development of my successful career.
