Thisquote takes place during a conversation with Holden’s former historyteacher. Holden’s teacher is talking to Holden about his failure, andabout the importance of following the rules. Holden fails most of hisclasses at his school, and is getting expelled for his failures.
AsMr. Spencer attempts to teach Holden the importance of applyinghimself, Holden simply ignores his advice and ridicules his teacherin his mind. He does not take criticism well, and refuses to improve. This is the opposite of most students because most students acceptcriticism to improve in a certain task.Itis apparent how Holden’s desire for independence is linked to afeeling of strong alienation. Holden will not fire at people in this, but the hat is a symbol of his distaste toward conforming. It proveshow much he despises regularity and that he is rebellious and willnot conform to society’s norm.FromHolden’s perspective anything said can be perceived as evil andhorrible, as if there were no such thing as a hopeful wish.
He isconstantly negative, and simply refuses to believe that there is apossibility of a remark being genuine. This negativity alsodistinguishes him from most people, since most people prefer to havea positive mindset as to be happier in their lives. He is an exampleof a non conformist that refuses to alter his actions, in hopes ofbecoming successful. Junogets pregnant at a young age, not conforming to society’s tendencyof using protection to avoid pregnancy. She can also be quitecharming if the situation requires it. Her attitude hides anemotional side since she can be overwhelmed by emotions. She is alsoprone to making rash decisions without thinking about theconsequences of her actions.
Even though Juno is a pregnant teen, she represents teen immaturity. Junotook the news of her pregnancy much easier than most girls would.Throughout the movie, Juno makes jokes and sarcastic statements toother characters regarding her pregnancy. She cannot take anysituation seriously enough to be a responsible person.
