‘Transforming India: Social Concerns & My Suggested Solutions’ “Development is about transforming the lives of people, not just transforming economies”.Joseph Eugene Stiglitz(Professor Colombia University & American economist)A country can’t be called developed by merely improving the statistics. It also needs to improve life of its citizens. We need to make our citizens innovative, skilled, educated and healthy.
There are number of challenges which India is facing from decades like Poverty, Illiteracy, Child Labour, Corruption, etc. In order to overcome these problems there are many initiatives that was launched by government such as Skilled India Mission, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and many more. India is a land of diverse community and religions. It is unfortunate that more than 1billion population 350 to 450 million people are living below the poverty line. We all have heard “The rich get richer and the poor get poorer”. This is true, first and foremost cause of poverty is fast growing population. Our country is over populated. Unemployment, Inflation are also responsible for poverty in India.
To combat the issue of poverty government of India has launched various schemes like SGSY,EAS,FWP,MNGREGA etc. but still poverty has not been eradicated from the country.India is home to almost half of the world’s illiterates. It is the one of the most pressing issues which is the bane for the society.Around 48% of its population is still completely illiterate.
The government of India took many initiatives to increase the rate of literacy like The National Policy on Education, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, Mid Day Meal scheme, etc. Though, after all these initiatives by government still 26% of population cannot read and write.Apart from this women are the main victims of social issues. Women in India generally face problems of sex discrimination, high percentage of illiteracy, dowry system, Gender discrimination, Sexual harassment etc. The government has taken many steps to stop the abominable practice of these issues like Rajiv Gandhi Scheme for Empowerment of Adolescent Girls (RGSEAG), Kishori Shakti Yogana, Indira Gandhi Matritva Sahyog Yojana(IGMSY)etc.
According to the Indian National Crime Bureau reports there were about 6787 dowry death cases registered in India in 2005 and approx 70% of women in India are victims of domestic violence not only this, in rural India 70% girls are married before 18 and 56% of those married bear children before 19.A shameful plight!!!Only women in India are not the victims of society. There are various other issues also which are faced by Children of india like Malnutrition, Child Labour, Forced begging .These are those issues which still impact our country. The Indian government has enacted many laws to protect child rights, namely Care and Protection of Children Act,Integrated Child Development/Protection Scheme, etc. The rate of Child Labour,ForcedBegging,Malnutrition is increasing day by day in our society.
With this situation of our country we aren’t a developed nation.India is transforming is true but for a developed nation citizens plays a vital role. The Government launched many schemes, missions for each problem but all these doesn’t make much change in current situation.Lots of problems can be solved by making some minor changes. Such as To control the population “A Two Child Policy” must be enacted by the government.
It states that one couple shall be allowed to have two children only. Major steps which have been already implemented but still need to be emphasized to control all these problems. The welfare and status of women and girls should be increased, spread of education, more health care centres for the poor should be established, more job opportunities for youngsters must be opened and sex education must be given to students. This is not enough there must be a total ban on the employment of small children, encouraging women empowerment at ground level mostly in rural areas and to overcome the issue of illiteracy each and every contribution by a literate person may eradicate this menace.
Poverty can be eliminated if the poor people get the jobs according to their needs and skill. Dowry system can be removed from the society if we become more progressive, less orthodox and more revolutionary in our ideas. Thus, it is concluded that every issue that our society faces is like a link in a chain.
They all are interconnected with each other and if one issue is overcomed like illiteracy than indirectly Population,Unemployment,ChildLabour and Poverty will be eliminated from the country. India is transforming and it will be a developed country if its citizens become more skilled, educated, innovative and healthy. A country is called developed when its citizens are developed. Transformation must start from each person living in india. If everyone contributes something in the society then that day is not far when we heard this is ” India, A developed nation”.
