What is Architecture?Architecture is the practice of designing buildings.
An Architect’s job is to design a building to suit their client’s needs. The practice of the architect means offering or rendering professional services in connection with the design and construction of buildings, or built environments. We looked at quotes from some famous Architects including Renzo Piano who said “Architecture is a very dangerous job.
If a writer makes a bad book, eh, people don’t read it. But if you make bad architecture, you impose ugliness on a place for a hundred years.”. This is one of the quotes that stood out for me. Its very true though, an Architects job is to design a functional building that suits their clients wants and needs. Architects design and plan spaces, with consideration for looks (aesthetics), safety and accessibility, functionality for the client, cost, and specifying construction materials and processes that do not destroy the environment. But as an Architect, you are expected to design a building that is unique or fits in with its surroundings without looking out of place.
An Architect is responsible for over seeing projects and ensuring the safety standards are suitable for the public. They are not just involved in the design of the building. Their role is important throughout every stage of a project, from the initial concept, to the construction and completion of the building.
History of ArchitectureThe history of architecture is a broad subject, but is a crucial in understanding Architecture. Architecture has been a big factor in Civilizations development. It shows how civilization has progressed through-out history reflecting civilizations changes. Architecture is not just a form of art, but is also crucial in catering for human needs. It can also protray the history of a place at a certain time.
Architecture is a coherent chain of events, tendancies, beliefs, styles and techniques. This enables us to gain an understanding of how and why architecture was made and how it can be made tomorrow.Ancient Architecture is the period ranging from the earliest forms of civilization.
Architecture here spanned over long periods of time and took place at different parts of the globe. These include Prehistoric Architecture (Neolithic period), Etruscan Architecture (early stages of Roman Architecture) and Egyption Architecture (described as the ‘Mother of Archtecture’ beginning from 3000BC and dies when Egypt gets conqured by Rome in 300BC.).The Architecture of Norman Foster, Richard Rodgers, Michael Hopkins, Nicholas Grimshaw and Terry Farrall can be found across Britan and the Globe. In their youths they collaborated and their work was hailed as a radical new style of Architecture- High tech. In later years they became rivals.
Their buildings were sometimes controversial, but they turned into the most successful generation of Atchitects Britain has ever produced. From housing to offices to airports, the world we live in now is the world that they designed. Norman Foster
